2 Frankl, Viktor E., Der leidende Mensch.
Anthropologische Grundlagen der Psychotherapie
|
Hans Huber, Bern/Goettingen/Toronto/Seattle 1975-2005
ISBN: 3-456-82808-X
Pages: 252
Translated title: Suffering Humanity. Anthropological Foundations of Psychotherapy.
Publishing History: First edition 1975; extended edition 1984; most recent (3rd) edition 2005
Content: This is a combined and augmented edition of the earlier books "Der unbedingte Mensch / Metaklinische Vorlesungen" (1949) and "Homo patiens / Versuch einer Pathodicee" (1950). [A translation of these titles would be: "Unconditional Man / Metaclinical Lectures" and "Homo patiens / Attempt at a pathodicee".] The additional chapters are reprints of articles and transcriptions of lectures.
As the subtitle specifies, this book lays down, exhaustingly and in great detail, the view of man that is fundamental to logotherapy. Chapter headings range from "The body-soul problem" to "The problem of spirituality", "Cerebral pathology and phylogenesis of the spirit, "The problem of mortality" to "Pathology of zeitgeist and "Metaclinical analysis of the meaning of suffering".
From the endorsements: Joseph Wolpe (Behavioral Therapist): "Frankl's contribution to psychotherapy has been great. He is perhaps the only nonbehaviorist to have contributed a method to behavior therapy. The modesty with which he has put forward his important work has been remarkable."

were launched in 1974, 1982 and 1986. A paperback edition was published by Piper.
Content: The book is based on a workshop the author was commissioned to give in 1947 by the City
Hospital of Vienna (the "Policlinic"). The audience comprised hospital doctors from various Vienna
hospitals. Accordingly, the text is drawing mostly from case studies collected by the author in his
many years of neurological/psychiatric/psychotherapeutic work. In order to guide the reader through
the multitude of cases, a theoretical section precedes the main body of the book. Chapter headings
refer to the logotherapeutic methods of Paradoxical Intention and Dereflexion, the fundamental
concepts of Logotherapy and Existential Analysis, the important differentiation between organic and
functional disturbances, and to a large number of specific neurotic disorders.
